In a world where alchemy comes with a heavy price, brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric learn the hard way that "you can’t gain something without losing something of equal value." After trying to bring their mother back to life—a major no-no in alchemy—they end up paying a terrible toll: Edward loses a leg, and Alphonse his entire body. To save Alphonse's spirit, Edward sacrifices his arm to bond him to a suit of armor.
